AI competitor analysis works when the agent pulls company data instead of guessing it. On 20 October 2026 an agent profiled five US budgeting apps by founding year, staff range, funding and App Store rating. Monarch, founded in 2019, rated highest at 4.89. Rocket Money's profile lists 7 funding rounds up to a Series D. The run cost $0.0015.

How to do an AI competitor analysis that you can check
Ask a chatbot to compare competitors and it writes a confident table from memory. Headcounts, founding years and ratings may be out of date or made up, and nothing tells you which.
An agent with company-data and app-store tools fills each cell from a lookup instead, and you can see the call behind every number. The run below compared five US budgeting apps on founding year, staff size, funding and App Store rating, and pulled the leader's Product Hunt launches. One funding lookup failed and was not charged, and two profiles listed no rounds. The page shows all of it.

What the table says
Size, funding and rating do not move together. Rocket Money has the most ratings by far, 400,669, and the only funding history in the run, 7 rounds with 38 investors. It also has the lowest score of the five at 4.47. Monarch, founded in 2019, has the top score at 4.89 from 114,720 ratings. Copilot Money, with 11 to 50 staff, holds 4.75.
Monarch also shows how a newer app built attention. Its 2021 Product Hunt launch ranked #3 of the day with 80 comments, and it came back in 2023 with an AI assistant that ranked #11. Its funding profile lists no rounds, though it does list one acquisition.
For a founder that suggests the space rewards product quality over scale and capital. A small team can rate as well as a large one. It also suggests where to look next: read the newest reviews of the leader and the laggard to see what separates them.
Why the funding column has gaps
The funding source shows rounds, round types and lead investors, but keeps amounts and dates for its paying members, so this page has no dollar figures. A profile with no rounds listed means the source shows none, not that the company raised nothing. Check a company's own announcements before you write "bootstrapped".
Staff bands also differ by source. The company match put both YNAB and Rocket Money at 201 to 500 staff. The funding profiles say 101 to 250 for YNAB and 251 to 500 for Rocket Money. Use one source per column, and say which.
What this run did not find
The Copilot Money funding lookup returned HTTP 503 and was not charged. PocketGuard's funding was not looked up, and the run pulled Product Hunt launches for Monarch only. A retry and two more calls at $0.0003 each would fill those cells.
Staff ranges are what each company lists on its public profile, in bands such as 51 to 200, and can lag reality. The App Store figures are for the US store on the run date. This run used public company data only and looked up no individual people.

Good questions,
short answers.
Can AI do a competitor analysis?
It can if it calls tools for the facts. Without tools, an AI writes from memory and can invent numbers. In this run every founding year, staff range, funding round and rating came from a lookup, and the call that failed is shown.
What data can an agent pull about competitors?
Public company data such as founding year, staff range and location, funding rounds with their type and lead investors, Product Hunt launches, and app store ratings and reviews. Funding amounts and dates were not available, and the run looked up no individual people.
Why do some companies show no funding?
The funding profiles for Monarch and YNAB listed no rounds, so the table says "None listed". That reflects what the source shows, not proof the company never raised. One more lookup, for Copilot Money, failed with HTTP 503 and was not charged.
How much does an AI competitor analysis cost?
This one cost $0.0015 for five companies in 7 calls. The company match was free, the failed lookup cost nothing, and the other five calls were billed $0.0003 each from prepaid credits.
Is this better than a competitor analysis template?
A template gives you the columns. The agent fills them from sources and shows where each value came from. Use both: start from the columns you need, then let the agent fill and date them.
A prepaid balance, spent per call.
Top up by card and your agent spends the balance one call at a time. This run cost $0.0015. Credits never expire, failed calls cost nothing, and every tool in the metered tool catalog shows its price before your agent calls. See per-call pricing.
