FOR Founders and product managers studying a competitor app before they build their own
How to analyze App Store reviews of a competitor
A competitor's star rating is an average over years. Its newest reviews tell you what is breaking now and what its users would leave for. That is the opening a new app can aim at.
By hand, you open the app's page in the App Store and Google Play, sort reviews by newest, and copy the low ones into a sheet. With an agent, one prompt finds the app, pulls its newest reviews from both stores, reads the Google Play star counts, and sorts the complaints into themes. The run below did that for Rocket Money, the budgeting app with the most App Store ratings in the search.
One prompt.
Your agent runs it.
Your agent picks the tools, makes the calls and reads the results. You see each charge as it settles.
Every call.
Every charge.
What your agent asked each tool, what came back and what it cost. Calls that failed or found nothing were not charged.

What the reviews say
The newest reviews are far harsher than the average. 17 of the 25 newest App Store reviews and 17 of the 40 newest Google Play reviews gave 1 or 2 stars, while only 8% of all Google Play ratings are that low. Recent reviewers skew toward people with a problem, so read this as a list of pains, not a drop in quality.
The two stores complain about different things. On the App Store, 8 of 17 low ratings are about the app's own subscription: hard to cancel, charged after a trial, or charged more than the plan picked. Users notice the irony of an app that cancels subscriptions and sells one. On Google Play, 7 of 17 are about signing in after the latest update.
For a founder, the openings are clear billing with an easy cancel, and an app that keeps working with smaller banks. Both come up in users' own words.
Limits of this review analysis
It read 65 reviews from one week, out of 41,662 written reviews on Google Play alone. The App Store reviews tool returns about 25 per page and the Google Play one up to 199 per call, so a deeper pass pages back further. The themes here are the agent's grouping of short texts, and a few reviews fit two themes.
Each of the 4 calls answered on the first try at $0.0003. Store reviews are public, but this page shows no reviewer names.

How do I analyze App Store reviews of a competitor?
Pull the newest reviews from the App Store and Google Play, keep the 1 and 2 star ones, and group them by theme with a count and a quote. This run read 65 reviews of Rocket Money in 4 calls for $0.0012.
Can I export App Store reviews for an app I do not own?
Yes, public reviews can be read for any app. A reviews tool reads the public storefront page by page, about 25 reviews per page on this run.
Why are the newest reviews so much worse than the rating?
People with a problem write reviews more often than happy users, and a recent update or billing change shows up first in new reviews. In this run 8% of all Google Play ratings were 1 or 2 stars, against 17 of the 40 newest reviews.
Can I read Google Play reviews the same way?
Yes. The run read 40 of the newest Google Play reviews in one call for $0.0003, along with the full star counts from the listing. The tool can also filter by star rating and sort by relevance.
How many reviews does one call return?
On this run the App Store reviews call returned one page of 25, and the Google Play call returned the 40 the agent asked for. Google Play allows up to 199 per call. Page back further on the App Store when you need more than the newest week.
